In modern medicine, speed and accuracy in clinical decision-making can be the difference between life and death. That’s why Philips Healthcare has developed the Visual Patient Avatar — an innovative interface that is transforming the way healthcare professionals monitor patients’ vital signs.
What is it?
Visual Patient Avatar is an animated, virtual model of the patient that displays physiological parameters in real time using colours, shapes, and motion. Instead of interpreting numeric data, clinicians see an intuitive visual representation that immediately indicates any changes in the patient’s condition. This enables healthcare providers to assess the situation at a glance — quickly, accurately, and with reduced cognitive load.
Which parameters are visualised?
-
Heart rate and pulse
-
Arterial and central venous pressure
-
Oxygen saturation (SpO₂)
-
Respiratory rate, airway volume and pressure
-
End-tidal carbon dioxide (EtCO₂)
-
Body temperature
-
Cardiac output
-
Brain activity (BIS/PSI)
-
Neuromuscular relaxation level (TOF)
-
Anaesthesia machine parameters (FiO₂, etc.)
Why is it effective?
-
Rapid situational awareness. Clinicians can instantly determine whether vital parameters are within normal ranges.
-
Reduced risk of error. Visualisation minimises the chance of overlooking critical changes.
-
Customisable thresholds. Alert parameters can be tailored to each individual patient.
-
User-friendly interface. The avatar's appearance, visible parameters, and data sources can all be configured via a clear and intuitive menu.
A New Standard in Patient Monitoring
Visual Patient Avatar is easy to set up using the monitor’s menu interface. Users can adjust avatar orientation, toggle parameter displays, set measurement units, and choose data sources — all in a few simple steps.
More than just a technological advancement, Visual Patient Avatar represents a new generation of patient monitoring. It merges innovation with usability, supporting faster and more confident decision-making at the bedside.
Now available with IntelliVue series monitors (MX400–850, PM6100, PM6300, PM6500).
